I’ve been creating and making all my life but uninspired by art classes when I was at school, I only took up painting in my early thirties when looking for a new outlet for my creative energies and some time away from the kids. What started as a pleasant hobby has taken me on an amazing journey of discovery and experimentation. I am largely self-taught but have, in recent years, taken courses both locally and at the Slade School of Art in London.
I enjoy working in a variety of media and utilising both texture and colour but having stumbled upon the delights of silk painting some years back this has now become my primary medium. I love the lustre of the material, the intensity of the colours and the fluidity of the paints. The challenge of having to simplify my subject to its basic elements is particularly enjoyable and challenging. My inspiration primarily comes from the patterns and shapes found in the natural world and like to experiment with their scale and context, attemptingto create works that communicate my energy, enthusiasm and sense of fun to the viewer.
Recently I rediscovered my love of the British landscape and am particularly enjoying trying to communicate the simple beauty of my local environment in the silk medium.
I have lived in Maidenhead for over twenty years and am an active member of local arts groups including standing as a director of ‘Art on the Street’, a community organisation that aims to provide local artists with a town centre exhibition space and utilise their talents to help rejuvenate Maidenhead.
