Painting, to me, represents a way to express a feeling and hopefully provoke thoughts and feelings in others. Mostly, painting provides a means of relaxation which enables me to be creative. In addition, I feel that I have fun when I pick up a paint brush or palette knife and apply oil paint to the surface of a canvas.
I find painting fascinating, because it seems, often, to have a life of its own and the more I allow myself to be free, the more I am pleased with what I have produced.
It is exciting that I don’t know what the finished result will be. One strong element that I love about painting is that I can keep on learning, both from the medium used and from others.
I find painting rewarding because it provides a life-long learning experience. In addition, it has taught me to look at things differently. I see the colours in a white surface and the shadows cast on a person’s face by the light. I don’t just see one shade of green in leaves anymore – which is rather a headache, life was simpler then. I have even started to think about how to express something I have just seen or when I am almost asleep and an image comes into my mind.
I love playing with colour. Sometimes the colour combinations don’t work and at others times, they sing. At present I am exploring using different textures in my paintings. I mainly love people’s faces and I hope that one day, I will be able to capture a mood in a face that gives pleasure both to me and the recipient.
