When Becky was a little girl she was fascinated by her great Aunts stories of standing on the rooftops of London during the war, on the lookout for fires. Ever since she has been drawn to the lives that our buildings have seen. The trails of our everyday trace their patterns in and through our homes and cities. Where we live holds our history, sometimes written in the walls, with shrapnel marks. The patterns of architecture reflect the crisscrossing of a thousand lives. The glass of modern building can reflect not only older buildings, but the nature they occupy and the eternal sky.
Studying for her degree in printed textiles Becky began to explore architecture, the patterns and shapes, nature verses structure, and putting colours together. At the time textile print patterns were dominated by flowers, but choosing to work with contemporary bars Becky was able to print designs that would work in a more structural and public setting as opposed to the usual soft furnishings for home.
After University Becky continued with more structural pieces working freelance designing small repeats for fabric companies aimed at the US market. This led to some more illustrative work for wrap and greetings cards.
Deciding in recent years to return to architecture work, Becky has worked through her thought process arriving at her most recent work to date “structure and reflection” where she has used mixed media on watercolour paper to make layers to create interesting pieces which show the reflections of buildings, and the strength of structure, often showing the reflections of nature, or old buildings. Becky is also a photographer, and whilst events and merchandise photography is her main area she loves to photograph architecture and use this photographic work in her pieces.
