Although I still paint oil on canvas occasionally to ‘keep my hand in’ I have settled now into ‘my style’, selecting subject matter through my photography that expresses peace and tranquility, and sometimes just ‘optimism’. Complementing this mood in watercolour for lightness, and the use of sepia to obtain an ‘ageless’ comfortable atmosphere to allow the viewer to explore the extraordinary depth that can be found in a monochrome picture, to ‘feel the subject’, and in so doing, draw the viewer into the scene.
The simplicity of the subject, the restful monochrome appearance, seem to appeal and satisfy many tastes, resulting in selective commissions that occupy my ‘leisure’ time in retirement and give me many happy hours. Because I have always worked in fine detail I am able to reproduce this in my paintings to the extent that the question ‘Painting? or Photograph?’ often crops up in conversation.
