Vibratious, Tribal, Instant
When and how did you become an artist?
At my first interview for university the art tutor described my work as schizophrenic. I was accepted. A month later I ran off with a rock band and decided to be a musician instead. So that was that for ten or so years...
Creativity always seems to go in circles and once again I have fallen back into painting with a messy thud. I don't think anyone decides to be an artist, it's more an inbuilt passion and drive that demands an outlet.
Who or what are your inspirations and why?
I was very inspired by Pop Art and album covers as a teenager. Now I work in an auction house I get to see more classical art and appreciate the skill used. Eclectic 60's and 70's furniture and pottery also inspire me, the vibrant colours and styles are very eye catching. Music is also very essential when painting, it can feel lonely without sound following the paint.
If you could go for a drink with anyone, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Tom Waits. His stories, life, persona... It would be more than one drink.
