Sum up your work in a sentence:
My work is Inspired by colours and textures that surround us in nature.
When and how did you become an artist?
I started water colour painting as a hobby when I was at university , over thirty years ago. You could say it was in my blood as my grandfather was a signwriter by profession.
My professional life however was as a scientist working in the paint industry . It involved working with the technical aspects of colour and pigments , and also understanding the way we humans see colour and interact with colours.
When I retired from full time employment a few years ago I was able to explore using coloured pencils, pastels and acrylics, in my paintings with the help and encouragement of Paul Robbens.
My aim in a picture is to combine colours that complement each other while also capturing the way light interacts with the textures within a scene.
Who or what are your inspirations and why?
When I was working in Paris I discovered the work of the French Impressionists. Their emphasis on light and colour has been my guiding light in my paintings based on local scenery.
When travelling further afield it is the texture of cliffs and ancient walls that have caught my fancy .
Living near the River Thames and the Jubilee River, I have ample opportunity to capture those fleeting moments that reflect the changing of the seasons on the river banks and nearby meadows. I am continually intrigued by the colours that emerge as the light plays on the elements of a scene whether exotic or familiar. When all else fails, there's always the garden.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Anywhere where each day brings new surprises on familiar paths!
